Charleston - Part III - Bowen's Island Restaurant
April 2011
OMG! What an adventure!!! Glad we had our GPS! We left downtown Charleston, hopped on U.S. 17 heading towards Folly Beach. Got on Bowen's Island Rd, just cruising, nice paved road, next thing you know the sign says "End of City Maintenance" and we are on a long, dirt road, bumpy as it can be, no signs, don't know where we are going. We were cracking up! The parking lot was just as bumpy and dirty. No street lights. The restaurant's front door and the walls inside covered in graffiti (signed by customers). No walls, just bare studs. You stand in line at the counter to order your food. The menu consisted of a one sheet of paper inside a sheet protector. You get your own drink, plastic ware, napkins. No tablecloth. The tables are not even washed between the diners. No AC. A dog walking around. Yep, very laid back, you are on your own. It's all part of the charm of this place. Old tables and chairs. You can't find two chairs to match. Since Jason was having all-you-can-eat oysters, we had to go downstairs, on the first level. The first level is an unfinished basement! lol Oysters are served on a shovel (yes, big snow shovel) dumping hot oysters on the table, or on a plastic cafeteria tray. The oysters are steamed on a big grill, covered with a burlap cloth (see picture).I ordered shrimp and grits, they came on a greasy paper plate, they were Ok, they used instant grits. The kids had chicken strips with fries, hush puppies and cole slaw. I had to hunt ketcup, found one bottle. The hush puppies were really good! Hannah had so much fun helping uncle Jason shuckle cluster oysters. The two of them set at the table for 3 hours! She was dumping the shells in the whole in the middle of the table (trash can underneath). The kids were sitting on an old car back seat, Jason and Ben on a bench, me on a lawn chair. This place reminds me of a fish camp.. There is nothing fancy about it, not your regular restaurant. We didn't know we needed to bring a bug spray, Jason and I got eaten up by mosquitoes. The kids had long pants and long sleeve shirts on. The view from the restaurant deck was priceless, overlooking a huge marsh between James Island and Folly Beach. The sunset was breathtaking! Beautiful Low Country sunset, just the way Dorothy Benton Frank describes it in her books! Before we left, we asked Hannah and Abby to sign all of our names on the wall next to our table - heck, why not!...And how did I hear about this dive:
It was mentioned in "Southern Living" magazine a few months ago.
It's in "1000 Places To See Before You Die" book....now I know why! LOL
